Overview:
Azelastine is a type of antihistamine used mainly as a nasal spray or eye drops to treat allergies such as hay fever, allergic rhinitis, and itchy or watery eyes. It provides fast relief from sneezing, nasal congestion, and eye irritation caused by allergens like pollen, dust, or pet hair. Because it acts directly where the symptoms occur, it works quickly and with fewer whole-body side effects than tablets.
How It Works:
When your body reacts to an allergen, it releases a substance called histamine, which causes swelling, itching, and mucus buildup. Azelastine blocks histamine’s action right at the site of the allergy — in the nose or eyes — helping reduce those symptoms before they worsen. It also helps prevent mast cells (cells involved in allergic reactions) from releasing more histamine.
Mode of Action:
After spraying or applying Azelastine, the medicine attaches to H1 receptors in the nasal or eye tissues, preventing histamine from binding to them. This blocks the allergic response locally, which means less inflammation, less swelling, and clearer breathing. Its effect usually starts within 15–30 minutes and can last up to 12 hours.
Common Side Effects:
- Bitter taste in the mouth (especially if used as a nasal spray)
- Mild irritation or burning inside the nose or eyes
- Headache
- Tiredness or drowsiness (uncommon)
Serious Side Effects:
- Nosebleeds (usually mild and stop quickly)
