Overview:
Ambroxol is a mucolytic medicine, which means it helps break down thick mucus in the lungs and throat, making it easier to cough up. It’s used for conditions like bronchitis, chest infections, or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), especially when mucus buildup makes breathing uncomfortable.
How It Works:
Ambroxol works by thinning and loosening mucus in the airways. This helps clear mucus from the lungs and allows you to breathe more easily. It also increases the production of a natural substance called surfactant, which helps keep the airways open and prevents them from sticking together.
Mode of Action:
After being absorbed into the body, Ambroxol acts directly on the mucus in the lungs, breaking down complex sugar molecules that make it thick and sticky. It also stimulates tiny hair-like structures in your airways, called cilia, to move more efficiently and clear mucus out of the lungs. This “mucus-clearing” effect helps relieve chest congestion and improves airflow.
