Acne

Overview:

Acne is a common skin condition where spots, blackheads, or whiteheads appear on the face, chest, or back. It happens when hair follicles become blocked with oil and dead skin. Acne is most common during teenage years but can affect adults as well. It isn’t caused by poor hygiene, and most cases can be managed with the right skincare routine and pharmacy treatments.

How It Works (What’s Happening in the Body):

Your skin produces an oil called sebum to keep it healthy. In acne, the glands make too much oil, which mixes with dead skin cells and blocks the pores. Bacteria can then grow in these blocked pores, causing inflammation, spots, and sometimes painful cysts. Hormones, stress, and certain skincare products can also trigger acne flare-ups.

Advice (What You Can Do):

  • Wash your face twice daily with a gentle cleanser (avoid scrubbing or harsh exfoliators)
  • Use non-comedogenic (non-pore-blocking) skincare and makeup
  • Over-the-counter gels or creams with benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid can help clear blocked pores and reduce bacteria
  • Avoid squeezing or picking spots as it increases inflammation and can cause scarring
  • Be patient, acne treatments can take 6 to 8 weeks to show improvement

Red Flags (When to Seek Help):

  • Painful, deep cysts or nodules that may cause scarring
  • Acne affecting confidence or mental health
  • If pharmacy treatment hasn’t helped after 8 to 12 weeks
  • Sudden severe acne in adulthood (could indicate a hormone imbalance)
